Quartz Silica- Powder & Grains |
Quartz is made up of a lattice of silica (SiO2) tetrahedral. It is the 2nd most common mineral in the world. Its very hard rock having hardness around 7 on the Mohs scale and its density is 2.65 g/cm3.
Quartz is a common constituent of granite, sand stone, lime stone and many igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It occurs in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites. Well-formed crystals may reach several meters in length and weigh hundreds of kilograms.
The variety of quartz occurs either in translucent or mostly opaque, while the transparent varieties tend to be macrocrystalline. Although many of the varietal names historically arose from the colour of the mineral, current scientific naming schemes refer primarily to the micro structure of the mineral. Colour is a secondary identifier for the cryptocrystalline minerals, although it is a primary identifier for the macrocrystalline varieties. This does not always hold true. Not all varieties of quartz are naturally occurring. Some coloured mineral is produced by heat treatment. At PEEKAY MINERALS only natural Quartz is available.
The quartz mineral is usually processed in the grain size of 0 to 6 mm. However, it can further be ground in fine mesh as per buyers' application choice or demand. For commercial classification the qualities of Quartz are governed as identification marks like Glassy, Snow white, White or Semi-white grades.
The processing techniques at PEEKAY MINERALS ensures consistent quality, control of size and freedom from impurities at pocket friendly costs.

Pyrophyllite |
Pyrophyllite is a member of phyllosilicate mineral spices, or Leaf silicates, which have sheet-like structure. It belongs to the clay family and composed of aluminium silicate hydroxide : AlSi2O5OH. The phyllosilicates from stacks of silicate layers that are composed to SiO4 tetrahedrons and the sheets are not directly linked above or below to the next silicate sheets.
In pyrophyllite, two silicate layers are sandwitched in between the so called gibbsite layer. Gibsite Al(OH)3, is its own mineral and is composed or octahedrally coordinated aluminiums surrounded by six hydroxides. The Gibsite layer (G) in pyrophyllite is identical to gibsite’s structure except that four of the hydroxides are replaces by four oxygens from the silicate layer (S). The overall pyrophyllite can be imagined as stacked S-G-S sandwitches. The bonding between these sand witche is nearly nonexistent and gives rise to pyrophyllite’s softness and perfect cleavage.
Pyrophyllite is also identical in physical properties to a quite distinct mineral called talc. The two are isomorphous, meaning they share the same monoclinic structure but have different chemistries. Talc has magnesiums instead of aluminums and is basically indistinguishable from pyrophyllite without a chemical test for aluminum. The test for aluminum involves applying a slight amount of cobalt nitrate solution on the specimen and then igniting the solution. The specimen should change color; a blue color confirms pyrophyllite, a violet color confirms talc.
Pyrophyllite is a mild mineral (hardness of 1.0 to 1.5 on Mohs scale) with pearly luster. It has lower the firing temperature, reduces shrinking and cracking, and improves thermal shock resistance.
Major application of pyrophyllite is in ceramics as talc counterpart, particularly in the manufacture of white ceramic products such as floor tile, wall tile, and electrical porcelain. Because of its PCE of 30 to 32 (moderate to high duty), pyrophyllite is used as refractory in brick form or monolith, other applications of pyrophyllite are as insecticide carrier and extender in paint, Filler in plastics, paper, rubber, and vinyl tiles.
Pyrophyllite when calcined are used in Engineering Ceramic products. While refined Pyrophyllite after calcination is suitable for paint application as an extender. At the same time It is most suitable as an active filler in Thermoplastics when micronized and surface modified.

Feldspar |
Feldspar are chemically alumino-silicates. There are several types of feldspar available in the state of Rajasthan (India): Most deposits offer sodium feldspar, potassium feldspar and mixed feldspar.
The fusibility of the mineral make it useful raw material for many application and the purity is the indication of better fusibility in the application. The geological context specific to each deposit gives the feldspar a variety of physical and chemical properties, thus providing products for a full-range of ceramic and glass making applications.
At mines the deposits are blasted to break up the rock and make it accessible to the diggers and loaders. The material after breaking up are manually sorted to prepare feed stocks and than each lot is tested with a view to providing the process plant with a constant homogeneous supply that is appropriate for the application purposes. The selected material is than transported to the users.
The remaining product (R/O) is directly sold in the form of sand to glass manufacturers or ground for ceramic markets.

Calcined Kaolin |
Calcined Kaolin is an anhydrous aluminium silicate produced by heating hydrous china clay after water washing to high temperatures in a rotary kiln. The clacination process gives an increase in the original hardness of kaolin and alters the morphology of the kaolin particles completely. When calcination process is done at around 700 deg C, the dehydrogenate of the kaolin is complete, forming a partially crystalline meta kaolin. Fully calcined kaolin products with an amorphous structure are formed around 1000 deg C.
Fully Calcined kaolins can be surface modified with functionalised coupling agent Silane to give a particle coating capable of chemically bonding with the polymer. After surface treatment the dispersion of filler is also improved. In view of the reduced surface activity, calcined kaolins give good reinforcement and permanent set properties, at the same time maintaining very good processing conditions.
The processing techniques at PEEKAY MINERALS ensures consistent quality, low specific gravity, good whiteness and freedom from impurities at pocket friendly costs.

Kaolin (China Clay) |
Kaolin is a hydrated aluminium silicate crystalline mineral formed over many millions of years by the hydrothermal decomposition of granite rocks. It is a white soft mineral composed primarily Kaolinite mineral having chemical composition of Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O with minor amounts of quartz, feldspar and sheet silicate minerals (mica, illite, smectite).
Hard and soft clays are characterized by its fine particle size, platy or lamellar particle shape and chemically inertness. Clays having fine particle size are described as hard clay. Phyllosilicates being a sub group of silicate minerals that has typically less than 2µm in diameter. The combination of platy shape and fine particle size results in improved processibility, improved reinforcement, tensile strength, abrasion and tera strength.
After mining the above mineral ore is dressed, dried, pulverized, air-floated, water washed (levitated), calcined and surface modified. As per the application the grades are selected by the end user.
The processing techniques at PEEKAY MINERALS ensures consistent quality, control of top-cut and average particle size and freedom from impurities at pocket friendly costs.
Application & Features:
Ceramics:
China Clay is an essential constituent in Ceramics. It is used by almost manufacturer worldwide in Electrical porcelain, Fine China & dinnerware, Floor and Wall Tile, Roof Tile, Pottery, Sanitary ware, Tableware and other engineering products. The properties important for the use of China Clay in Ceramics are –Plastic Properties, Drying properties, Firing properties, Firing Color, Electrical properties such as conductivity, dielectric content etc.
Our clay permits product to be easily deformed under stress without rupturing and retains shape produced when stress is removed. Due to low water of plasticity, it does not require intense forming pressure to withstand handling/drying and the Green Strength is better. The Firing properties are excellent to produce super white finish. The processed clay is free from grits and all metallic impurities. The particle size is very low and even which keeps drying shrinkage in desired parameters.
Our Clay is most porous and platelets are very fine and smooth, closely squeezes together to let the water of plasticity evaporate easily without any cracks.
Good Vitrification property is the important constituent of our Clay. Vitrification is the process of becoming glasslike. Although Clay products never become vitrified or glasslike, it is necessary that the Clay become HARD (almost vitrified) at a reasonable temperature. Any substance will melt at some temperature. Our clay holds better its shape and do not sag or slump in the primary melting stage which sets it apart from other clays. RUBBER HOSES, EVA FOOTWEAR & ALLIED APPLICATION:
Clay is a non-black mineral filler used in rubber and EVA Polymers having largest volume after Carbon Black filler. It owes this opportunity to a combination of low cost, low to moderate reinforcement and processing benefits. Due to its low cost, economy in compound cost is attained. The price of polymer and other additive chemicals, fillers are rather high.
The clay ore is produced from various deposits of mines. The Ore is dried, pulverized and refined by either air-floatation or water washed to remove impurities and to produce clay in the desired particle-size range. There are many types of clays but in Rubber it is termed as 1) Soft Clays, or 2) Hard Clays- terms derived from relative rubber hardness produced.
Durometer hardness is the usual starting point for a guide in selecting clay loading. A rule of thumb in many elastomers is to use 5-6 phr of hard clay and 7-8 phr of soft clay for each point in hardness above the base hardness of the unfilled compound. When clay is used to replace other fillers, it is recommended that the replacement be based on equal volumes. Refinements in the formulation to accommodate processing and hardness can be made by a rubber technologist by the addition of process oil.
Thus clays can be formulated to rather high loadings in most elastomers, with soft clays allowing somewhat higher loadings than hard clays. Process aids are frequently used to improve dispersion and mechanical properties like tensile strength etc. The main factor to consider in adding clay to most formulation is its reduction of cure rate. Reduction in cure rate requires addition of an activator. In certain cases combination of Carbon Black with Hard Clays increases mechanical properties like modulus and tensile strength while reducing compression set and maintaining lower compound cost.
Clay is used in almost all types of rubber products including automotive hose, flooring tile compounds, EVA FOOTWEAR. Since it remains inert it is naturally nonabrasive and its neutral pH value shall have additional process advantages though few applications prefer acidic pH value and some alkaline ph value. Peekay group provides Clay in different pH value suitable to the user industry.
To day the principal non-black fillers are clays, Whiting and calcium carbonate, & Silicas. Clays are used to the greatest extend, followed by calcium carbonate and silicas. There are three properties important for the users. These properties are particle size, specific gravity and price. The specific gravity of a filler effects the molded product’s final weight, which may be important in few application. Peekay group provides LOW & UNIFORM PARTICLE SIZE products to the benefit of its application as Semi reinforcing filler. The reinforcement of rubber, dependent on particle size, also has a wide range. The term “reinforcement” applies to improvement in mechanical durability, usually related to tensile strength, tear strength, and abrasion resistance. PAINT & INKS:
Clay has been used for painting application by the people of the ancient world as white, plate shaped material because of its earthy nature, its fineness, its opacity, and its easy dispersability in water.
Later, the refining process developed and the quality is stabilized in terms of users’ friendly-ness. Basically the refining process is similar as described in earlier chapter of ‘Rubber’. By nature Kaolin is soft, white, plastic clay mainly composed of fine-grained plate-like particles. Individual Kaolins vary in physical aspects, which in turn influence their end use. Of particular commercial interest in paint application is the degree of crystallinity which influences the brightness, whiteness, opacity, gloss and viscosity.
In paint application Kaolins are used in Hydrous and Clacined Forms. It can improve optical, mechanical and rheological properties of paint.
Hydrous Kaoilins are used in water and solvent based paints in distempers, interior and exterior paints, primers and undercoat. Calcined Kaolins are widely used in satin and matt paints where they can deliver increased opacity, whiteness, and scrub resistance. Kaolin is particularly useful now a days as a partial replacement for TiO2 pigment.
In paint application Kaolins are used in Hydrous and Clacined Forms. It can improve optical, mechanical and rheological properties of paint.
In practical it is found that there is no specified standard specifications of Kaolin published by big manufacturing plants, rather it is mentioned “to match standard” that are already in their use. The quality is determined by degree of its brightness, Whiteness, Opacity, hiding power, gloss, water demand, oil absorption, particle size, specific gravity and viscosity.
Our plant at present offers Hydrous Kaolin only, which are pulverized grades, air-floated grades and water washed (Levigated) grades. Calcined kaolins are in process of manufacture/ creation of facilities.
When formulated in paint, fine Kaolin act as functional extender of TiO2, reducing formulation cost and improving rheology. Our WHITFIL grade of product do not offer so much potential to extend TiO2 but do enhance the dry film properties of primers and undercoats. ROYALBRITE grade product offers paint makers the possibility to extend TiO2 in solvent based gloss paints processed using high speed dissolvers rather than bead mills traditionally associated with this type of paint- cutting processing time and increasing efficiency.
Recent trends are using Hi-Brite Clays in manufacturing Semigloss, Full gloss of Oil based paints, coatings and inks. It improves coverage area, scattering, flowability. Good quality Kaolins keep the paint in suspension and its sediment resistance.
PLASTICS:
Kaolin provides smooth surfaces, dimensional stability and resistance to chemical attack. It also conceals fiber reinforcement patterns and reduces shrinkage and cracking during polymer compounding and shape forming.
When it is surface modified it is used as a functional filler and rheological modifier to improve mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. Kaolin is used in PVC wire & cables, High Voltage insulating compounds, engineering plastics, specialty films, automotive parts based on engineering thermoplastics.
Ultrafine and best purity products are recommended in plastics.
Our value added products have been developed to offer user friendly application that shall be made available on request.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH- DE POWDER |
Diatomaceous Earth is a soft powder formed from the fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of hard shelled algae). Its unique in couple of ways-
The FDA classifies Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) as generally recognized as safe and is commonly used in things like toothpaste, as an anti caking aid, for clarifying beer or wine, or to eliminate pests naturally.
Diatomaceous earths unique structure makes it a great natural way to kill insects and pests (including intestinal), gently cleanse the digestive system, and improve hair, skin, nails, and teeth.
The strong negative charge of diatomaceous earth means that it naturally attaches to and removes from the body things like: chemicals, viruses, bacteria, heavy metals and even radiation.
Its sharp\ strong structure allows it to puncture the exoskeleton of insects on a microscopic level, causing them to dehydrate and die (while humans and animals are left completely unharmed).
Uses for Diatomaceous Earth
At our house, we use DE regularly to help avoid parasites, to get rid of pests like ants or fleas, and to help improve hair, skin and nails. I also personally know people who have used diatomaceous earth to

Ground Calcium Carbonate |
Calcium Carbonate is composed of the crystalline mineral, calcite, which occurs naturally in the form of chalk, marble, dolomite or lime stone. Chalk is formed by shells of Nanofossils that is a fine micro crystalline material. Other forms of calcite are also of biogenic origin but more compacted than chalk. Marble deposits are limestone changed by crystallization under conditions of extreme heat and pressure. In some cases, is process yields pure marble of exceptional whiteness. Good quality marble and dolomite deposits are available in the state of Rajasthan (India).
High quality stones are manually selected at the mines and after its purity tests, these are sent to the processing centre. During the process the stones are washed to remove impurities. These stones are crushed and grinded as per the customers' requirement.
The powder is further processed to micronize varying micron size up to 5 microns top cut. After micronizing it is subject to a process of unique surface coating with fatty acids or suitable coupling agents. The coated products become hydrophobic which increase the compatibility with polymers and other organic based Additives.
